1. Why did you choose to work in the healthcare field?
I chose to work in healthcare because I was always interested in medicine and knew I didn't want a desk job and wanted to have more of a practical hands-on career.
  2. What is the most rewarding part of working in orthopaedics?
The most rewarding part of working in orthopaedics, specifically joint replacement, is that you get to see a very quick turn around to your hard work. You can witness a patient come in that has been struggling with pain and ambulation for months and then a couple of weeks later after surgery, they [can] walk and have a new positive outlook on their daily activities.
  3. If you could have anyone in the operating room with you, who would it be?
If I could have anyone in the OR with me, it would be my brother Brian Barlow MD, who is an attending ortho surgeon at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego. We did get to do a couple of cases together during his fellowship here at HSS which was very special.
