Franciscan Health and William K. Payne M.D Receive Innovation Trailblazer Award for Adoption of New Navigation System for Hip Replacement Surgery

July 11, 2018 (Olympia Fields, IL) – Dr. William Payne, local orthopedic surgeon, and Franciscan Health Olympia Fields, together, receive the Intellijoint Surgical Innovation Trailblazer Award of Excellence to acknowledge their adoption of intellijoint HIP – a highly accurate 3D mini-optical navigation system that assists in size selection and positioning of artificial implants during hip replacement surgery.

“By providing intraoperative implant measurements to assist in accurately positioning hip implants, intellijoint HIP has allowed a reduction in the number of radiographs I would normally take during a direct anterior hip replacement,” said Dr. William Payne, Orthopedic Surgeon at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields. “Reduced exposure to fluoroscopy is better for everyone in the operating room during a procedure including my team and, most of, all my patients.”

A total hip replacement is a generally successful surgery that can reduce hip pain and restore mobility but, as with many procedures, there are risks. These can include leg length discrepancy, dislocation, joint instability, reduced muscle strength, reduced hip range of motion, and long-term pain. intellijoint HIP addresses these risks by providing accurate, intraoperative measurements for cup position, leg length, and offset to assist the surgeon in placing implants in a location that best matches the patient’s native anatomy. intellijoint HIP is disrupting traditional navigation by being smarter, faster, and more affordable.

“We are honored to receive this award that celebrates our commitment to bettering patient outcomes and advancing the technology of joint replacements,” said Allan M. Spooner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Franciscan Health Olympia Fields and Chicago Heights. “Through the adoption of innovative techniques and technology like intellijoint HIP, we are able to help patients of all ages regain mobility and finally find relief from the pain of deteriorating hips.”

“Our goal is to provide patients with an advanced level of care by providing every surgeon with effective, easy to use technology,” explained Armen Bakirtzian, CEO, Intellijoint Surgical.  “Franciscan’s ’inspiring health’ philosophy aligns perfectly with this goal and I am excited to present the Innovation Trailblazer Award to them. This is an award for both innovating in technology as well as overall cycle of care innovations.”
